Amazon announced Monday that it will invest $10 billion in Ohio data centers beyond the billions the company has already announced.
The company’s Web Services’ division announced that it will build the centers by the end of 2030.

“The new data centers will contain computer servers, data storage drives, networking equipment, and other forms of technology infrastructure used to power cloud computing, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning,” according to a news release from Gov. Mike DeWine’s office.
Amazon noted that the $10 billion is in addition to $7.8 billion announced last year and $6 billion previously invested. In all, Amazon Web Services (AWS) expects to invest more than $23 billion in Ohio, second only to Intel’s $28-billion investment in two semiconductor factories in New Albany.
“These are significant investments from AWS that support Ohio’s growing reputation as the tech hub of the Midwest,” Lt. Gov. Jon Husted said in the news release.
Amazon did not say where the data centers would be built but said it is evaluating sites. It noted it plans to expand its data center footprint outside central Ohio.
“Since 2015, AWS has invested more than $10.3 billion in the state and currently supports more than 4,760 jobs annually,” said Roger Wehner, vice president of economic development at AWS. “This expanded investment is expected to create new, well-paying jobs, boost Ohio’s GDP, and further cement our partnership with the state.”
The company said the investment is contingent upon reaching an energy agreement. Amazon and other data center builders have been negotiating with American Electric Power over energy supply and cost to the centers, which consume tremendous amounts of power.
“On an energy agreement, these projects are still in early stages,” said Amazon spokesperson Lindsay Bednar. “We’ll provide more information as it becomes available.”
Amazon’s announcement follows a stream of announcements from major tech companies including Google, Meta, Microsoft and Cologix planning to spend billions on central Ohio data centers. A 2022 report ranked the Columbus area as one of the 10 largest data center hubs in the nation, though more recent reports say central Ohio is outside the top 10.
